I just finished reading the book Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and I loved it. I saw so much of myself in Elinor, and so much of my own sister in Marianne. The book took me ages to finish. I credit my short attention span to my burnt-out book child self and my addiction to short form content like Youtube Shorts and Snapchat Spotlight. I was really proud of myself when I finished it though because it was really good and really worth it. I’m going to be reading all the Jane Austen books in chronological order when they were written, so Pride & Prejudice is next. It’s been my favorite movie (the 2005 version) since I was a middle schooler so I’m quite excited to read it.
I guess I used to think that it was better to read a book first and then watch the movie adaptation, but I’m not so judgemental towards people that do the opposite anymore; instead of being so extremely disappointed by the movie when you read the book first, the movie sets the scene and gives you a face for the characters you’ll read about after, so you don’t have to construct them from scratch in your head. But either way, I’ll be watching the movies made after the Austen novels after I finish each one so I don’t spoil the book, since I”m not familiar with the stories. And also, the old English is hard to get through, so I really don’t want to spoil any exciting things that might happen so I can keep myself engaged and not take 20 years to finish each novel.
